Halloween and The Bible

Halloween is coming.  The stores already have out candy and costumes. Guess it will be different this year.  I remember my Dad telling me stories about how he would go out for hours and trick-or-treat.  Those days were long past when I was young.  We would go out around the neighborhood with my Dad with us.  In the later years, we could go by ourselves, but not very far.  We weren’t allowed to eat anything homemade.  Had to throw it out.

The Creatures

If you are ready for some Halloween tales, get a bowl of popcorn/candy and ready yourselves for some Halloweenish creatures from the BIBLE!

I’ll leave a link at the bottom if you want to read up on the Bible commentary for the verses.

Creatures From The Deep

God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind; and God saw that it was good.”

Genesis 1:21 (NASB)

“There the ships go to and fro, and Leviathan, which you formed to frolic there.”

Psalm 104:26 (NASB)

Some Bible scholars say it is a crocodile, whale, or dinosaur.

The Giant Ones

“The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes old, men of renown.”

Genesis 6:4 (NIV)

“We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”

Numbers 13:33 (NIV)

I talked with a Bible teacher about the Nephilim in the past because it is so intriguing to me.  He said that some scholars think they lived through the flood.  Because of their height, they didn’t drown. They also believe that Goliath was a Nephilim.

The Dry Bones Come to Life

“Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life.  I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’”

So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.

Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.’” So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet—a vast army.

Ezekiel 37 (NIV)

The Silver Cord

“Remember him—before the silver cord is severed, and the golden bowl is broken; before the pitcher is shattered at the spring, and the wheel broken at the well,”

Ecclesiastes 12:6 (NIV)

The Witch of Endor

“The Philistines assembled and came and set up camp at Shunem, while Saul gathered all Israel and set up camp at Gilboa. When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid; terror filled his heart. He inquired of the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him by dreams or Urim or prophets. Saul then said to his attendants, ‘Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her.’

‘There is one in Endor,’ they said.”

1 Samuel 28 4:7 (NIV)

A Final Blessing and Prayer

From ghoulies and ghosties and long-legged beasties and things that go bump in the night, Good Lord, deliver us.
