What I’ve Learned from the Hasidic Jewish Community-#3

Number Three is “Absorbed with God”

Before I begin, I will be using the word “Jewish”. I have read that there are negative connotations to the word “Jew” and so to try to be as respectful as I can, I will use the term “Jewish”.

I’ll be showing these videos in the way that they match my topics and not necessarily the way they were filmed.

These two videos discuss clothing. The way men/women wear their hair or cover their hair is also discussed.

This struck me because even by getting dressed they are following commandments. I feel if anyone chooses to look at this from the right lens, they are absorbed with God.

As a Christian, what can we learn?

  • Modesty. Is one thing we can learn. There is something to be said for it. We should strive to be modest, in thought, word, deed, and of course, dress.
  • Focus on God as we get ready for the day.
  • We need to be the light of Christ shining through the world, so the way we look and our actions during the day is a reflection of him.

Timothy urges women to not adorn themselves with elaborate hairstyles and gold in 1 Timothy 2:8. A commentary I read says “Women who profess the Christian religion, must be modest in apparel, not affecting gaudiness, gaiety, or costliness. Good works are the best ornament; these are, in the sight of God, of great price.”

Personally, I don’t think there is anything wrong with wanting to look nice. I think the crux of the matter is how you go about it and where your heart and mind lie.

Here are some verses to think about for going about our day.

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

Philippians 4:8 (NIV)

He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

Psalm 91:4 (NIV)

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;  you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV)

“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV)

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. …”

Let us all strive to be an example in thought word and deed and mirror Christ back to the world.
