The Power of Quiet

“The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded than the shouts of a ruler of fools.”

Ecclesiastes 9:17 (NIV)

The Quiet Life

I am a quiet person.  I’ve always been that way. I also used to be extremely shy. People at school would accuse me of being stuck up, but they didn’t know me.  I’m quiet around people I don’t know and I’m hard to get to know.  I’m very guarded. I also overthink, but that’s another post.

Because of my hearing, I have to pay attention and be quiet.  I have to focus for my mind to process.

Think about other times in your life when you were quiet.

Quiet at the Crucifixion

What about the Bible? There are times in the Bible that I think it was quiet.  I think about the day of crucifixion. Christ died, there was an earthquake, the curtain ripped. Then silence………

Can you hear it? Do you feel the silence of the Earth? I believe it was breathtaking.

Quiet at Creation

Again, it was quiet on the seventh day of creation.

“By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day, he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.”

Genesis 2:-3 (NIV)

I think God was quiet on that day. He watched and enjoyed everything he created.

God in the Silence

Job 6: 24 (NIV)

“Teach me, and I will be quiet;

    show me where I have been wrong.

God is in the silence.  Silence is a teacher. When someone makes a mistake, they are quiet.

“Because the palace has been abandoned, the populated city forsaken.

Hill and watch-tower have become caves forever,

A delight for wild donkeys, a pasture for flocks;

Until the Spirit is poured out upon us from on high,

And the wilderness becomes a fertile field,

And the fertile field is considered as a forest.

Then justice will dwell in the wilderness

And righteousness will abide in the fertile field.

And the work of righteousness will be peace,

And the service of righteousness, quietness and confidence forever.

Then my people will live in a peaceful habitation,

And in secure dwellings and in undisturbed resting places;”

Isaiah 32: 14-18 (NASB)

“Quietness and confidence forever.” That is our goal. Look for the moments of quiet in your life. Do you see God there? Can you hear Him?

There is power in quiet. Look and listen.
