Psalm 6:1-2 (NIV)
“For the director of music. With stringed instruments. According to sheminith. A psalm of David.
Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger
or discipline me in your wrath.
Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am faint;
heal me, Lord, for my bones are in agony.”
I’ve got arthritis in my hands. My doctor first told me it was tendonitis, but reversed his decision and said it is arthritis. It is not fun.
I hurt in the spot right under each thumb in both of my hands. It is sometimes worse after a day of typing and using the mouse.
I read the above verses from Psalms and wonder if David had arthritis or if he was being dramatic.
It makes me laugh to think of him singing about arthritis on his stringed instrument.
Job 30:17 (NIV)
“Night pierces my bones; my gnawing pains never rest.”
Job must have had arthritis.
Here is another mention of bones hurting in the Psalms
Psalm 102:3 (NIV)
“For my days vanish like smoke;
my bones burn like glowing embers.”
Don’t know if David wrote that one or not, but the author must be familiar with arthritis.
My hands have cared for people, written letters and love notes, bathed my child, fed my animals and folded in prayer.
They deserve to hurt a little after doing so much all these years (well, not THAT many years).
Psalm 95:4 (NIV) “In his hand are the depths of the earth,
and the mountain peaks belong to him.”
I rest in the knowledge that the maker of the universe holds me in his hands and if mine hurt a little, it is worth the pain.
